| The photo at link [1] below is identified as "1860's Slave Family". Of course it is in black-and-white, so you will have to imagine the colors for yourself. But it is a posed family picture, and I'm sure that everyone put on their very best clothes for the occasion. The three women (two standing, one seated) are much better dressed than the men. The second link is also to an original slave-era photo. The detail is not as good as on the link [1] photo. The third link takes you to a portrait photo. Her wedding ring tells us that this is a free woman because slaves couldn't legally marry. But the style of her dress and hair date from the early 1860s, right around the time the Civil War began. I believe that this photo is from Kansas; if so, the woman is probably a successful run-away slave, harbored by a white abolitionist family. The fourth link takes you to a re-enactment photo, not to an original contemporary photo. But it is in color, and it seems to be an accurate representation. The three women are preparing a meal (not therefore in their "Sunday Best"). |

| Slaves were not cheap to buy and they were bought for a purpose. It did not make sense to beat them or starve them as a normal process however there were occasions where this may have been used to "break" a wily or recalcitrant slave. Most slaves were allowed to marry and have guyren however they could also expect to be sold a few times during their working life. For this purpose if a slave was compliant and worked well he would be looked after. That does not make slavery OK , it is still an evil and barbaric mindset that keeps slaves. |
